  • don't laugh

when I first started volunteering in the girls' brigade in 2005, I thought it was so communist-ic.  groups of boys and girls wearing uniforms and marching around their "parade square" like little bands of nationalistic teens. for example:

BUT, don't laugh...this is me now in "full uniform".  That's right. I'm now an officer - Cadet Lieutenant!  haha...all this for my girls...but i still haven't learned how to march well.  but marching is kinda fun.

  • our twins

sorry...we never showed off our baby bikes to you...

    our twins went to kranji war memorial (~7km) - a beautifully serene place; upper seletar reservoir (25km total); to work and back (~5km daily); from holland road to yewtee (~10km); from jurong east to buona vista (~5km); around changi beach/park to airport (~??); on the bus to seletar airport and cycled back across lower seletar reservoir (~20km); sembawang park (~10km); albert's twin went around East Coast park connectors (~42km); and sometimes the bikes stay home (0km);

our twins are celebrating their 4-month old birthday soon.

having twins is tiring...we have both lost weight.

  • happy mother's day!

recently, my sis-in-law got into college in the usa...time for orientation, opening bank accounts, visiting the campus...

    So!

    IMG_0046

TO my mom who cried for 3 months before I went away to college,

and who is now a wonderful mom and grandmom to so many more than just 3 girls,

and who is a godly model of kindness, strength, love and generosity

(and who hopefully soon can come visit us in Singapore)

    Happy Mother's Day!

    Love, Pris and Albert

  • things i've meant to write...

i've had two months off, now i've been working for 2 weeks now at a local polytechnic (cross between end of high school and community college).  it has been so fun and i'm looking forward to my first week in the classroom next week.  the teaching style here is SO different....

anyway, things i've meant to share with mainly my family (and you are welcome to read too):

    - fungus grows everywhere in the hot, humid weather. in my shoes, on my bags, on the walls, in the shower, and worst, on my head.  i think it's finally cleared after some serious medication...

    - there are a lot of people who meet me now that can't detect i'm not a local.  I'm really proud of my ability to pick up the lingo and the accent!

    - two months off was a great time of meeting up with friends, running errands, reading books (!), exercising, sewing projects, and spending time with my GB girls.  although friends tell me they get bored after 2 weeks off, i wasn't bored at all!  been thinking how serving in the GB ministry really does require full-time, not just my weekends.

    - albert and i bought two foldable bikes. tiny wheels, amazing design, pretty fast and super portable. we can actually take them on the trains and buses. he's taken me to the old Selatar airport, all along Changi beach, park, boardwalk, around all of woodlands, much of sembawang, from jurong to holland v, holland v to khatib (over an 1 hr ride!). we've been exercising a lot more now.  stretching too, according to bel's advice.  albert gets almost boyish when he's biking, like it brings him back to his younger days in malaysia.  as for me, i'm scared to death of the fast cars and buses, so i'm not quite ready for road biking yet...maybe in a few more months. for now, i like the sidewalk or "pavement".

    - if you know my wardrobe for the last....um...10 years, i have finally bought some new clothes for work. can you believe it? shoes too...it's so sad that tevas and flip flops aren't acceptable footwear in the office. but i still hate shopping.

    i'll update again in 2 months. =)

  • thank God...

alright! success in the PhD defense and now i'm 99.9% done. my stomach has been churning all day, and my heart beat double-time, but i'm done! Thank God and all the people He placed in my life to help me along this way.  Just like Dad says about his degree, i say the same. It was only by the grace of God. Before I start making those corrections on my thesis, i'll stop to blog and give thanks:

    - Illinois is a great place. I grew as a Christian here, met Albert, learned patience (through the research), kept many good good friends. I do not regret any years here.

    - Thank God for my main advisor Prof Snoe-yink and co-advisor Prof Mar-inas. They were so encouraging and supportive. What would I have learned through constant criticism and pressure? No, they were kind and motivating and that pushed me toward the end much more

    - thank God for allowing me to work in Singapore. I was blessed to marry Albert AND get to finish the degree. Who else could have arranged that?!?!?!

    - thank God for letting me continue serving at church and in on the campus and in the Girls' Brigade. Prof told me once that i work slower than others...but he said that's ok. cuz he understood where my priorities were.  thank God. i have found "favor in the sight of God and man"....wow.  and i was still able to finish in 4.5 yrs. putting God first never fails to be a blessing.

    - seeing as God led me each step so far...no doubt he'll continue to do so.and "the Bible tells me so"

  • is it really snowing in Maryland?

last week our CF (christian fellowship) kids were over on saturday and helped us set up our christmas tree (thank the Shih family). in the To family, i was always the one to pull the tree out. i'm hardly a sentimental person, but i have to say, i really like christmas trees and christmas music. it's different celebrating christmas here cuz many people don't even celebrate! my office mate's parents will be working their hawker stall that day. this will be my 2nd christmas in singapore.

  • i think i like people. with albert being away, i just want to find people to talk to and do things with! i don't even have much to say. when bel called, it was great! (thanks!)  and i have great friends who have been inviting me to stay over at their homes. last night was tennis. thursday i might go for a climb and swim! on one hand, i love the freedom of saying "yes!" to all these invitations. on the other hand, albert come back soon! it's nice that we like to talk and do things together.

perseverance = the quality needed to finish writing this thesis!  help from above, please.

PTL!  my wait-listed flight was approved. I'm going to champaign!

chinese people always say "have you eaten?" ...well, we have 2 teens that come to our house pretty often, and they shed new meaning on "have you eaten?" cuz when we ask them, we really mean it. they don't always have the next meal cuz their family income is so low. Is that the origin of the question?  i think it's morphed into the same as nothingness as "how are you?" in the US. I have to admit it's inconvenient to have to think of food i can whip up when I know they haven't eaten, but God asks us to joyfully love others despite inconvenience.

  • my husband, 2 friends and 3 teens were forced to celebrate thanksgiving with me.  well, first of all, the weather was marvellous yesterday. cloudy, kinda wet, felt a little like a rainy fall day, but probably 20 degrees warmer. never mind!  it was considerably cool. thank God for a fall-like day. then i was supposed to meet my two friends to plan out next year's GB program, so i sprung a thanksgiving dinner on them. hahaaa. actually no turkey...but we had chicken, mash potatoes, veg, and my favorite...stuffing and apple crisp...(gulp! stove top costs sgd$5.50!! that's usd$3.50+ with the deflating dollar. and we invited 3 of our neighbor teens over too...so yes, we celebrated thanksgiving this year!  but i had to explain to my victims what thanksgiving was first. poor things had to tolerate a tasteless (compared to their preferred chinese food) american meal. but i loved it. this sure beats the nothing that I did last year. i quite like this holiday.  today i will celebrate by...uh, going to work!
